I’m based in the heart of West Yorkshire, between the M62 and the M1, and travel about an hour each way.

The CPS applied to adduce the complainant’s account at the scene as res gestae instead of calling them. I opposed it under s.78: no chance to cross-examine. The DJ refused it and no evidence was offered.
Admissions in an unrepresented interview, with s.78 applications ready. The officers didn’t attend; I opposed the CPS adjournment for no good reason and late disclosure. Refused, no evidence offered, defendant’s costs order.
Notice served requiring the intoximeter operator. The CPS tried to prove the reading through an observing officer and a late statement. Reading excluded under s.78, no evidence offered, defendant’s costs order.
The case rested on a fingerprint on a false plate. Put to proof on every element, then a half-time submission of no case to answer. Upheld; the client never gave evidence.
Acted from the first interview. Jurisdiction retained in the magistrates’ court for sentence, with full mitigation. Non-custodial outcome.
Totter on 15 points. Evidence on oath closing off every alternative, after a similar application failed in the same courtroom that morning. No disqualification.

When a firm instructs me as its agent, it sends me information about its client, which can include details of criminal allegations. I use it only to carry out the instruction, keep it confidential and secure in line with my professional duties, and share it only as the case requires, for example with the court, the prosecutor or the police. The client remains the firm’s client.
The instructing firm; courts, prosecutors and police where the case requires; my accountant; and the providers I use for email, phone, bookkeeping and banking. Some providers may store data outside the UK, with the safeguards the law requires. I never sell personal information.
Case material is kept only as long as the instruction and my professional obligations need, then returned to the firm or securely deleted. Invoices and accounting records are kept for six years, as the law requires.

I learned the magistrates’ court from the inside. Before I defended anyone, I advised the people who decide the cases.
I trained with HM Courts and Tribunals Service as a Legal Adviser across West and North Yorkshire. I advised magistrates on the law, sat with District Judges and dealt with thousands of cases of every type, from first appearances to trials, including totting up, special reasons and exceptional hardship. I qualified as a solicitor in February 2022.
I then moved into criminal defence at a Legal 500 firm in West Yorkshire, qualifying as a duty solicitor within six months of joining. I went on to a highly regarded regional, multi-service firm with offices across South Yorkshire and beyond, working alongside its head of crime, a partner with over 30 years’ experience. Clients in Doncaster and Sheffield still ask for me.
I now work as a consultant duty solicitor and Legal Aid Agency supervisor, covering hearings and interviews for firms independently through Spectre Legal.
